Hippocampus
The hippocampus is a structure deep into the temporal lobe. The hippocampus is responsible for long term memory and memory retrieval. It also plays a role in spatial memory, allowing people to have awareness and keep track of where objects are around them and allows us to create mental maps in our head. This part of the brain is also part of the limbic system and functions by creating new memories, learning, and emotions.
Consciousness
Consciousness' is our awareness of ourselves and our environment. There is not only one layer of consciousness though, for example our mind can see a squirrel and we notice it yet our mind is noticing not just the squirrel but the environment, color, depth, etc.; 11 million bits of information are processes yet we only focus on 40 bits. This is through selective attention, we focus and have conscious awareness on a particular stimulus or stimuli. Selective inattention is when our attention is directed somewhere else and you fail to notice obvious things that you would usually notice.
Theories to Intelligence
There are many theories to intelligence as well as to what type of intelligences there are. There is a general intelligence in which researchers found that people who perform well on 1 cognitive test tend to do well on other tests. Intelligence is a general cognitive ability. There are multiple intelligences based on skill and abilities that are valued in different cultures. There is as well emotional intelligence which can be abbreviated to EQ. EQ is a persons abilities to regulate emotions and their emotions to relate to others, which is called empathy.
